Humanities, Ethics And Professionalism

The John P. McGovern, M. D. Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit is devoted to scholarship, teaching, and culture change in the medical humanities—an interdisciplinary field which examines medicine and health care through the lenses of philosophy, religious studies, history, literature.

In the first-year course, Introduction to Clinical Medicine, center faculty discuss historical and cultural contexts of patients’ lives, helping students to expand their moral imagination and strengthen their capacity to care arts.

With participation from faculty throughout the medical school, we teach a mandatory 2nd year course
Introduction to Ethics and Professionalism, in which students learn how to recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas.

In Ethics in Biology and Health Science, graduate students are introduced to ethical dilemmas faced by all levels of scientists working in today’s modern laboratory.

A broad array of electives are available for students interested in further exploration of the medical humanities.
