Medicine, Media And the Arts

Like the arts, health care deals with suffering and joy, triumph and tragedy, dignity, degradation and decay in human existence.

The arts—unlike didactic teaching— slip by emotional defenses and allow students to experience and reflect on their fears, anxieties, hopes and sorrows.

The John P. McGovern, M. D. Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit brings poets and writers, visual and performing artists to share their perspectives on health and illness with students and the broader UTHSC community.

Students also have the opportunity to further explore the arts and healthcare through a number of electives, including the Art of Listening, Art of Observation, and the The Joys and Sorrows of Medicine: an Introduction to Filmmaking.
