The possibility of change

We can learn new and better ways to live our lives. That’s the message from ongoing research that shows how our brains grow and change throughout our entire lives. It’s what I’ve seen in 29 years of practice. And it is the message that anyone who feels there could be more joy and less pain in their lives should take to heart.

Research also suggests we tend to repeat what is familiar, even if it is not functional. This tells us we often need new experiences or influences and a conscious, clear intention to change. Therapy can help create that intentionality and it can provide the stimulus and techniques to create change.

My personal and professional experience shows that when we examine our behavior, we are less likely to repeat it unconsciously. When we are conscious of what we do, we can choose what to do.

My mission is to help individuals become more self-aware, make decisions more consciously and achieve their full potential in work and relationships.

Tools to live your life and relationships

Therapy is something you do. As a therapist, I help individuals see their thoughts and actions and provide tools to help them make decisions—tools to live their lives and live in their relationships.

Finding what works for you

The primary predictor of therapeutic success is the quality of the relationship between the client and the counselor. Shaping a safe, engaging relationship is central to my therapeutic technique. This relationship must make it safe for a client and the therapist to discuss the appropriateness of both the “fit” of personalities and the methods. The objective is to find both the therapist and the methods that most help a client. If I do not believe that I am an appropriate therapist for someone, I will attempt to help clients find the counselor best suited to their needs and goals. Defining and pursuing clear goals directs therapy.

Addressing specific issues

While I have a general practice, my specialties include relationship therapy, addictions and codependence recovery, trauma resolution and overcoming anxiety and depressive disorders. (See links on this page for details.)

A range of therapeutic approaches

My therapeutic approach to relationships is largely based on Imago Therapy in which I have been certified since l995. Other modalities I offer include family of origin and systems theory, Voice Dialogue and EMDR. (Links on this page provide more detailed information about each). I have chosen these approaches because they have sound theoretical bases and proven effectiveness. I practice only what I have personally found helpful.

My background consists of 29 years in clinical social work, the last 15 years being in private practice. I have worked both as a clinician and administrator. My therapeutic approach attempts to look at the whole person—biologically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. You can expect to have a non-judgmental and non-blaming advocate and guide.

I have been married for 20 years and am the mother and stepmother of five adult children. I bring my own experiences dealing with the complexities and challenges of relationships to my work. I have personally seen the enormous potential for healing that can take place within them. As Harville Hendrix says, “We are all pioneers in learning how to have connected, intimate relationships.”
